About Pisa

Picture Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery - Picture Karl BorgThe most popular pictures of Pisa are photos of Pisa leaning tower in the Cathedral Square, otherwise known as Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles). Such a name is very appropriate for these majestic monuments covered with Carrara marble and standing on the green lawn behind blue sky: the Duomo (Cathedral), the Baptistry, the Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) and the leaning Tower.

Climb the leaning tower of Pisa is a must-do during your holiday in Tuscany. Not the highest bell-tower in Italy, the leaning tower of Pisa is one of the world wide most famous towers. The less known, but no less interesting, of the four buildings is the Camposanto, a monumental Cemetery which contains a beautiful collection of Roman sarcophagi. The walls were once completely decorated with frescoes that were painted from the XIV century.

During the World War II, bombs dropped by Allied aircraft hit the Camposanto and melted the roof's lead, damaging the frescoes. Since then restoration works have been going on to bring these paintings back to their original state.

Taking Pisa pictures doesn't mean just to take leaning tower photographs in the Cathedral Square. Take a bit more time visiting this Ancient Maritime Republic and you will find other corners to photograph, such as Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knights' Square) and Lungarno (along the Arno river) whose colorful facades reflected in Arno river on a clear day. You can take panoramic pictures from the top of Cittadella's Tower.

During your stay in Pisa, you can see the Ancient Ship Yard of Pisa and the Carthusian Monastery of Calci: the first one is a shipyard set up in order to contain ancient Roman finds of sunk ships and the second monument is a 14th century monastery just few kilometers from Pisa.
